Do not be fooled. This is not the face of innocence.
My Carsen is a total trip, I tell you!
I have to preface this story with another story...
My cousin Drew is also a complete trip and always has been. All my life I watched my aunt Janet discipline her children and she always had trouble figuring out how to keep a straight face while getting onto Drew. It tickled those of us watching, because he was always (and still is) SO naturally funny. You cannot be in his prescence and not laugh, and I mean that in a good way. He's awesome. Anyway, here I am...years later, with a little Drew of my own in Carsen. I try and try to keep a straight face when getting onto her, but she is a character.
Her new thing is to come back at me, totally straight face, with some little growny catch phrase. For example, last night in the car she hit Camden. Well, Camden promptly swelled up, cried and told on her. Immediately I ask Carsen why she did it and she, completely straight faced (if not with a little bit of....what? sarcasm? I don't even know....but she knows) rattled of the following:
Carsen: I didn't mean to.
Me: What? What do you mean you didn't mean to? You hit her!
Carsen: I didn't mean to. It was an accident.
Me: Carsen, it's not an accident if you do it on purpose, Honey.
Carsen: But it's not my fault, Mom.
Me: Carsen, it is your fault if you hit someone on purpose.
Carsen: Well then I don't care. I just. don't. care."
It was perfectly articulate and her face was like an angel the whole time. And Camden & Aiden, at this point, are both looking at her with some sort of strange admiration.
At that point I lost it. Anthony had to take over and I just turned around and stiffled my laughter. It was like a game of how many excuses she could come up....and then the "I don't care," was just waaaaaaaay over the top. She's just repeating all the things she's hearing other kids (and adults!)say, whether they are appropriate to the situation or not. And it's her delivery that just gets you. I mean, she keeps that perfect, straight, angelic face while giving these obviously off-base reasons for what she did. The other day she didn't make it to the potty and when I asked her why she put on her straight face and said, "It was an accident. It's not my fault," then she hugged me and kissed my square on the lips before walking off and putting her panties in the dirty clothes and changing into new ones. I was speechless.
I've always said that she's going to be trouble. I have got to get a grip. SHE'S ONLY 3!!! Wow. Are we in for it in a few years or what???
